Shoe Issues
I love shoes. I never seem to get enough; there are always some pairs missing from my collection. I have them all lined up so I can look at them when ever I want. Sound familiar? I bet many of you feel the same way about shoes. I started thinking though: How many of my shoes do I actually wear? I decided to do a count to see where I’m at. Now I bet my number of shoes is small compared to real shoeaholics, but I ended up at exactly 60. Most of them are pumps and heels. I only own two pairs of sneakers (one that I’ve never worn). I have recently given away old shoes I don’t like anymore to the Salvation Army, so these are all shoes that I still like and plan to wear. The statistics tell me I could have given away way more:
# of shoes I wear regularly: 4 (Approx. 6,5 %)
# of shoes I wear from time to time: 10 (Approx. 17,5 %)
# of shoes I’ve worn a few times: 23 (Approx. 38 %)
# of shoes I’ve never worn: 23 (Approx.38 %)
Now many questions comes to mind: Am I too materialistic? Am I at all normal? Can any of you say you’ve never or rarely worn more than 75% of all your shoes?

oh honey, you’re normal. I have tons of shoes that I never wear, but I still think there’s a place for them somewhere down the line. Most of the shoes that I buy are inexpensive inpulse buys that are always on sale. Hardly do I ever set out to actually go shoe shopping. I’m like this with jeans too.

I am the same way. If a shoe doesn’t work practically into my life, I might rarely or never wear it. I might be too afraid of the breaking in process, even. I need more of different kinds of outings (it’s mostly mall and school = walking, and movies = gross floors, then there’s the cold weather …).
BUT I still feel like I NEED certain shoes. Like I don’t have an office job, but for months I was searching for that basic pump. Not needed. I don’t even go out to fancier events, like dancing. (I’m deprived in a sense, but I tend to do what I’m comfortable with, anyway.)
And then if I wear a heel, and it hurts, it scares me away from heels for a while. I’m excited to try that old wedge that came in but then I didn’t like ’til the end of summer! I hope I wear it.
Now… let’s SEE these shoes. ;-)

Sadly, of the 25 pairs of shoes I own, I only wear 2 of them regularly because all the rest of them have heels (2 inches or higher) and my job requires me to be on my feet for 5-8 hours a day. :( And yet I keep buying new shoes that I can’t even wear! I have one pair I purchased back in November that hasn’t even come out of its box yet.

This is so true. I think I buy shoes that reflect where I want to be in life. Like one day I will be walking the red carpet and these shoes will be perfect for that. (LOL) I run the same 4 pair of shoes and the rest sadly look at me all teary-eyed when I don’t reach for them. I do walk around the house in them all from time to time to ensure that neither one of them will get too jealous. I love shoes…even if I never get the chance to wear them all!

Puh, I’m not so bad afterall! :)
Suzy, mine are mostly impulse buys too. And many of them are secondhand shoes. ;) I haven’t bought many expencive pairs since I stopped working…
Designer Ella, I often save them to special occations so that if I break them it was worth it. I worry too much. And yeah, there is a lot of walking. :/ Many of the shoes are pictured here: http://stylebytes.net/2006/01/01/apartment-tour/ :)
S, then we are on about the same # of % of shoes we actually wear! Thank god! :)
Tania, I SO know what you’re talking about! I see myself being that gal that runs around in heels and dresses all the time. I see myself in outfits I want to wear and then I just HAVE to have these shoes, but I often end up not wearing the outfit once. Well, well, NEXT summer… ;)

I have so many pairs of shoes that I do not wear that it is actually pretty funny. I have extra pair of heels at work just incase I need to zip into a meeting. I do admit that I need more shoes that I will actually wear more often. Great idea with the book shelf as a shoe shelf!

Thanks turboslut! :)
Dinah, the book shelf worked well while I didn’t too many shoes. I don’t have room for another shelf… :P

You are soo normal. I have so many pairs of shoes, I haven’t counted in a while, but only wear a teeny percent because I live in NYC and walk to work, and I don’t want to ruin them. So instead, they sit unworn in my closet. It makes me so sad.

I am just like this. I live in San Francisco and walk everywhere — I wear heels a lot and am quite skilled in walking in them, but have several pair that I never (or rarely) wear because I either don’t want to ruin them or they’re just impractical to walk in.
But it’s worth it. I still dream of these gorgeous Christian Lacroix heels that I didn’t buy (at probably 75% off!) because I didn’t need another pair of “impractical” shoes. But they were sex on my feet, truly unique and just perfect and…sigh.

Yes to carpeted sidewalks! Or shoes made of steel! Anything, just as long as all of us poor girls can walk those heels all day long!

Exactly the same. And it’s ok, because just having pretty shoes in the cupboard is good enough in my books, like little pieces of art that make you happy knowing they’re there.
