Shopping For Basics
Filed in: Fashion, Links, Shopping
I find basics both difficult and boring to shop for. This means that the number of basics I need is growing fast. I need hoodies, cardigans, simple skirts, t-shirts, long sleeved t-shirts - you get the picture. Now that I have bought the most important trend items of the season it’s the perfect time to start investing in some good basics.
American Apparel have some perfect basics for my need. The t-shirts are in great quality and they have the small neck that I like. They also have lots of other great basic clothing. The first problem is that because of import rules and money issues I have to shop a little at a time. The second problem is the fact that The American Apparel Store have some of the most expencive American Apparel clothing available. The alternatives, that are much cheaper though they’re selling the exact same products, don’t have the same selection. In stead of paying $15 a tee or $38 a hoodie I turned to Oneoff Clothing that have an OK selection and sell the same American Apparel tees for $10 and hoodies for $26. You can get them even cheaper on Amazon, where the same tees are down to $7. These aren’t shipped to all locations though.
In the first shopping round for basics I ended up with three tees at Oneoff Clothing in black, heather and asphalt. I am very pleased with myself for making such good decitions and it even made me look forward to shopping for more basics.

I just discovered AA thanks to Sharp Lily, and bought up big (as you saw on my blog). I can’t wait to receive it, I’ll be sure to post about it! There is also Tuffy McPuggles on eBay who has almost everything AA does in all colours/sizes for much cheaper: http://search.stores.ebay.com/Tuffy-McPuggles_american-apparel_W0QQftsZ2QQsaselZ26849380QQsatitleZamericanQ20apparelQQsofpZ0

I don’t know if they ship over there, but I get my basic tees from oldnavy. They have the high neck and not-too-tight but still shaped fit that I love. Two possible cons: they are a heavier weight, which can be tricky for layering (but is great for wearing on their own–no show through!) and they’re sometimes availible in the weirdest colors. But they’re cheap–2 for $15. Worth a look, for sure.

Julia, thanks for the link! I tried eBay, but I could only find a few things that were much more expencive. Don’t know where this one was hiding! I have tons of AA t-shirts and I love them, but they’re all with prints.
Vdoprincess, I’ll check it out! They sound great. It’s the tight neck that is the most imporant to me) and as long as they have that and the quality is OK, I’m content.

I don’t know the int’l locations, but Target has great basic clothes in the US. I bought all sorts of tanks and tees for under $7 from there, and they fit great. The Mossimo line and the Isaac Mizrahi clothes are perfect for the budget conscious, yet stylish shopper!

Topshop has but the quality sucks nowadays…I got one white basic tee from Uniqlo for 3.99 pounds. The material is like jersey but fitting. It was quite a good one I can say.

Kate, AA are great quality clothes so you won’t be disappointed!
Meg, they probably sell AA in some stores in England, but I really don’t know where to find it…
Anitra, I only wish we had Target in Norway. They don’t ship here either. Someday that may change though.
Siew Kwan, Topshop is another store I wish we had here. H&M and other stores like that don’t have good t-shirts.

Well I received my package yesterday (3 days by Fedex, how fantastic!) and I absolutely love it all. The cotton and quality are great, the tshirt dresses are cool and I’m just really happy with it all!

Ooh, thanks for sharing! :) Even though I love the quality of the t-shirts I had no idea how the rest would be, so it’s good to hear that it’s all great.
