Fashion Cycles

Filed in: Fashion, Magazines

elle fashion grunge 90s I got Norwegian Elle in the mail yesterday and while flipping through it I came across a picture that was so me 10 years ago. It has everything; the wide pants with a skirt or dress over, a more body hugging top and a knitted hat. You would even find me at the library a lot at that time. I would wear the outfit a lot, often in my favorite colors gray, purple and brown.

I don’t remember whether I wore this because it was the style. I wasn’t very concerned about trends at that time and you wouldn’t see anybody else in an outfit like this where I grew up. Still, I probably got the inspiration from somewhere, I just can’t remember. I remember where I got the pants from though; they were what an uncle of mine wore when he was young. I have kept a couple of them.

Although I love the grunge look and the layering it would feel a little extreme to take it back to this exact combination. I’m kind of done with it. It represents a different time of my life. It’s fun to see for real how fashion cycles though. I was too young during the 80’s to get a kick of their return. Now I’m witnessing the return of the 90’s and it’s bringing back memories.

I Found My Skirt!

Filed in: Fashion, Magazines, Secondhand

Yesterday my boyfriend gave me a pile of old fashion magazines from 2000 and 2001 that he had kept. I find inspiration even in old magazines so I flipped through them looking for things to save. Suddenly I saw a black tulle skirt that looked just like one I have. It’s not rare that I see things that I have in magazines because I do shop a lot, but this was different because I had bought it at a flea market. The details on the skirt were all the same, and I remembered that the woman that had sold it to me was a stylist. I checked the name on the fashion spread and it turned out that it was the same woman! Then it left me with no doubt - it actually was MY skirt that was used for the spread. It turned out that she had bought it secondhand as well and sold it to me for more money than she had originally paid for it!

This has happened to me once before. I bought a pair of gold heels from a thrift store called Et Dukkehjem. The woman in the store told me that they had been through a lot, but I didn’t give it more thought. Later I received Elle only to discovered that they had used a pair of gold shoes looking exactly like mine for a fashion spread. I looked at the list and I noticed that they came from the same store. The shoes had probably been borrowed for the shot and I ended up being the lucky person that came along and bought them after they were returned.
