Hair Issues
Filed in: Beauty
I mentioned that I need to have my hair cut and now I have made an appointment for next week and I need to decide what to do. My original plan was to have it thinned and go for a 70´s straight look, more of the hippie style, as I think it will go well with my summer wardrobe. It´s not too big a change either, basically what I´ve always had anyway, only my hair is a little thicker. After cutting off a bunch of my hair it´s too short for that…
But since I´ve worn my hair the same way my entire life, I thought it was about time to try something new. A short hairdo with long bangs is an option. It might be too different and too scary though, and it will be limit my options considerably.
So I thought of bangs. They´re everywhere and that´s what bothers me, but then I thought about combining that with the 70´s look and go for really heavy bangs with rounded edges.
The thing is I´ve always been really boring when it comes to my hair and some advice would be very appreciated. Maybe you have completely different ideas? Or maybe there are hairdressers out there that might have an idea of what would go well with both my face and style.

i think the way freja beha cut her hair would look great on you. (i know nothing about hairstyling though-i’m getting totally confused too when the time comes when a change is needed!)

If you are going to go for bangs with that kind of feathering/layering down the sides, you really need to have pinstraight hair (as the hair models do) and it can be a hard style to keep up everyday (the layers start going every which way!). From your pictures, you seem to prefer the hippie, au natural look over this “perfectly placed” kind of hair though. Maybe a short layered bob with bangs? It’s pretty versatile and you can play with curling, flipping it in or out, or leaving it messy.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I prefer the shorter styles out of the photos you have posted, if you decide to get a straight fringe (I’m British we dont call them bangs) then I would suggest a shorter version, as fringes that end just above your eyes soon start to annoy you!
Oh and I would avoid a bob, they are a bit clone like over here. Not sure how popular they are in your country though.

The best thing to do is to find a style that works with your lifestyle. I have had the craziest cuts, so make sure you think well and don’t end up like me, with really short hair. I am letting it grow for real this time. I love short hair, only not so short. Good luck! Take a good look of yourself in the mirror and just imagine how you would look with shorter hair.

I cuted my hair off for New Year´s eve like the third picture, and I love it! I have longer hair though.

BTW
Have a great 2008! All the best for you, your blog is one of my favourites!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Thanks guys, this is so exciting, keep the good advice coming!
I was wondering Mer if you had the issues Amy mentioned, that you need straight hair. My hair is straight, but tends to curl just a tiny bit. And do you have a photo? Out of all of the hairdos I´ve thought about the third is my favorite. It´s a little Ramones, and I doubt they stood in front of the mirror every morning with a hair straightener! I want something that also can look good without putting too much work into it though.
Ahh, this is frustrating but exciting at the same time!
January 7th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Oh, and Amy, the short layered bob, is it possible to find a photo of what you mean?
January 7th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
I love short hair and had it for a long time but it’s a bitch to keep up. Frequent haircuts are required! You don’t need pin-straight hair for any styles anymore, really, you just need a straightening iron. I think you will look lovely in whatever you choose. Maybe keep it longer but add the bangs so that’s not such a jarring change.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
words of advice:
AVOID #2 like the plague.
Make sure you can still see. I’ve had bangs, and it is so obnoxious trying to keep them out of my eyes.
January 7th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Whatever style you choose, invest in a really good Chi flat iron, one that won’t damage your hair. It takes a few extra minutes in the morning, but it’s very very worth it if you want to pull off super straight styles.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
I had the same issue last year, boring hair, so I decided to go for the fringe(it looks really similar to the third photo) and I’m glad I did! My hair is really straight, so I don’t have any problems with it, but even when I style it a bit more wavy it still looks great and since I have thin hair it also got a bit of volume. I’m all for the heavy - Irina Lazareanu - fringe! Great site by the way!!
January 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I cut my very long hair (almost to my butt) a few years back to super short. I loved it! It was so so so easy. I have been thinking I wanted a change, so I grew mine out a bit and about a month ago cut a shaggy bang like the third picture. I like the look but it does take me a bit of time to straighten everything out in the morning. You can also do the same with a blowdryer but it takes longer. I like easy hair. I’m getting mine cut back off very soon.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Well only choose bangs if she can go to the hairdresser very often and for sure you have to buy a hair straightener with your type of hair. I’m talking from experience.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I know for myself when i first cut my hair short (it used to be half way down my back) i got kind of a beveled cut, longer in the front and gradually shorter in the back, it was awful growing it out because, my hair was drasticly different lengths and it was awful styling it. if you are a bit unsure about what style you want, start out with something subtle that won’t annoy you when it goes out a bit.
i like the first photo of the second group, you would look great in that! keep in mind if you have really long bangs you will have to constantly trim them.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Åh, du förtjusande flicka. Jag har haft långt hår hela mitt liv, men att klippa kort förändrade verkligen hela mitt liv, till det bättre. Har aldrig känt mig hetare. Och du skulle vara förtjusande i kort! Klipp det!
January 7th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I love the short cuts! However it does require getting your hair cut more often to keep the shape right. Still, if you cut it and don’t like it, it’s just hair! It grows back!
I’ve cut my hair from long to supershort and loved it; I keep changing my hair from time to time because I get bored with the same style.
January 7th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I tried to look at your photos again imagining you with a fringe…I think it might work for you! :) But of course you never know until you try!
And you don’t really need to visit your hairdresser that often to maintain a fringe- my hairdresser taught me to cut mine- it’s easy if you don’t let your fringe grow that much an cut it regularly. I just had to buy sharp scissors and that’s it, I don’t have to go to the hairdresser more often than before the fringe.
Anyways, new haircut in many years is a “big deal”!, so I’m very excited for you! Good luck!
January 7th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
yeah, I have to admit that your hairdo has always looked kind of boring to me, maybe because I’m so in love with changes. I usually change my hair style quite randomly, trying new colours ( now I’m thinking about green…). But what you have on your head suits you quite well, I think. It wouldn’t be so simple for you to change your style every day together with clothes, as you often do, when your hair was styled in one special way, like 70’s look or punk or a fringe hairstyle. No doubt long hair gives more ways to choose from and can be styled according to your mood and outfit.
I really can’t see you in really short hair or something that needs hairspray every day. Your outfits are usually too classy and ladylike to have hair like that.
But go ahead, we’ll see the results:) I strongly believe in changes.
And hair isn’t a tooth - it will grow again:)
January 7th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
my vote is to cut it short! hair, like fashion, is fluid, and you can always change it. over the years i’ve had mine long and straight, curly, bobbed, razored, pixie cut- you name it. short is by far the most fun to play with- experiment! even if it’s not what you expected, just wait a couple months and it’s like a whole new haircut! good luck:)
January 7th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
I think a Katie Holmes-style bob (search for very recent pictures) would look nice on you and work with your hair’s natural texture. Any cut with a bit of layering (or just some razor-cuts in between) will give it a natural, messy but chic look.

January 7th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
i’ve had my hair cut couple of weeks ago.and it’s some kind of bob i guess with bangs like in the third picture.although my hair isn’t curly, however it tends to do what it wants to do, so it’s really hard to control it.i don’t remember spending so much time on my hair like i do now.but i still love love love my bangs and sort of 60s look, so i’m not very frustrated because of having to spend a little more time than usually controlling it. and , well, from my experience, the blowdryer does not really help, i would go for the straightener..it’s easier and you are sure that you’ll get the result you want and always look fabulous :)
and the length..i’m always for the short hair!! hair always grows back and that’s great:)
good luck and have fun choosing your hairstyle!
p.s.great blog, by the way :)

I think you would look great in some sort of non classical style, but I know how it is. I always take the “safe” alternative. If you have easy and straight hair I think you should try something new that still isn’t to hard to style in the morning. Since I do not have straight and I really hate styling it I can’t even have bangs. Maybe the bottom left hairstyle would be new but still not to much of a difference if you don’t like it.
January 8th, 2008 at 2:06 am
Umm…there are a whooole lot of ways you could cut it…search on google images for “short layered bob” and see if anything looks interesting I guess. It really depends on what you are going for, since you can change it around to make it edgy or traditional (beckham vs holmes for ex). You can play around with bangs a whole lot too…going straight and heavy or maybe something more sideswept and soft looking.
for hair relating to the shapes of your face and such, i took a picture from a book i have - http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/4632/pict1972yo4.jpg
I say go for the second set if you’re going to pick from them - you can always cut it shorter if you feel like it, but it takes a while for hair to grow out!
January 8th, 2008 at 2:09 am
I vote for short hair for a change! I like to change my hair regularily…cause it feels good! I’ve had long and short hair, yes, short hair does mean you have to style it each day, but it’s SO quick to dry and wash, not to mention it’s not stuck on your clothes all the time! Long hair is easy to throw up in an elastic, but I find when I have long hair I do that too often and get stuck in a rut. Change is good!
My current cut is closest to the ‘long bangs short back” but I’ve avoided being too trendy by keeping it softly layered around the face. I agree, you don’t want a fringe/bangs hanging in your eyes…so my stylist and I agreed, the front pcs or my bangs, are long enough to tuck behind my ears….but short enough to curl into bangs if I like. I can make it look like a wedge bob, martha stewart, punky, refined for work…it’s a very flexible cut. And because it is sooooo short at the back, it’s super easy to do, you just style the front!
Good luck, love the blog as always. Ps LOVE your sofa.

I got bored during Christmas vacation and cut my own hair. I did the very thick bangs thing, but left the sides long. Normally i have very thick, wavy hair which i’m sure is a lot like yours from what i can see. What i say is there’s no way you’re going to be able to get a dramatically new cut without a different styling regimen. i had to as well, but it wasn’t overload. I just take a curling or straightening iron to my bangs in the morning and if i don’t feel like doing the rest of it, i can either leave it alone or pull the rest of my hair back. i love my bangs because it makes it look as if i’ve put a lot of effort into my hair when i would usually just pull it all back out of boredom. i say go for the bangs. you can always cut the rest later but at least you’ll have them to get used to first.

I think the heavy bangs look is underrated. I. myself, carried that look two years ago, but sadly my friends (who have no idea what fashion REALLY is) didn’t take much of a liking, so I was forced to conform to side-swept bangs. I’d say keep whatever length of your hair that you can and add the heavy bangs with the rounded edges. Maybe get a little help from a good quality straightener and BAM! You got yourself a look! :) But also, asking a hairdresser would be a safe bet. You don’t have to listen to me, though. I’m only sixteen! :D That’s just what I like, but I do suggest trying long hair looks, then gradually move up to something short if length isn’t your thing. I chopped off my locks immediately and was horrified by how it came out, so there’s my warning.
Good Luck! :)
January 8th, 2008 at 4:26 am
You have such lovely long hair and a gorgeous bone structure; I’m pretty sure you can pull off whatever style you decide you like.
Here is my two cents: I had long (elbow-length) hair last year and I chopped it off into an Audrey-esqe pixie cut. I loved it (no more combing my hair!) but my husband misses my long hair and eventually so did I. So now I’m growing it back out, and that is a MISERABLE experience. But it’s just hair–it will grow back!
But anyway, if you don’t want to go for a huge change stylewise, what about playing with the color a little? Since you do wear the “natural/sexy/mussy” look a lot, adding some high and low-lights would add texture without a ton of commitment (those are easy to grow out).
Anyway, whatever you decide on will be lovely, I’m sure.

Hi! I think a fringe is the way to go! I have curly-ish hair just past my shoulders and a fringe and I just blowdry/straighten the fringe and leave the rest to dry naturally! Get layers cut into your hair so you can go for the messy/shaggy look! it looks cute when you put it into a ponytail too!
Love Renee x
PS Love Love your blog it’s my fave!

I just went through the same thing - I was so sick of my hair but not quite sure what to do about it. Mine is pretty thin and straight with just a bit of wave in it. I went with the “fringe” and really love it. You can see the before and after photos on my blog…

i love the short hairdo, i have short hair for 3 years now and im still in love with it. even when you get bored with the long fringe later on you can still cut it and make it a modern bob. & not to mention short hair lifts up that freshness inside you that long hair concealed! if you’re going for a long fringe, things you have to consider is your hair light and wavy? it might make your hair look frizzy or untidy. also, as mentioned before, it needs high maintenance! it might also be a bit tough if you decide to let your hair grow again… unless you go for an extension.

I say start with bangs and leave the rest of your hair basically the same, or put in a few long layers if you wish.
Then if you want to do more later you can.
Baby steps if a drastic change seems to scary!
Bangs themselves can make a huge difference, and I think they would look great on you.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:09 am
i think with your pale, fair skin you should dye your hair black or dark brown… it’ll look awesome on you
as for the style: a classy short bob with bangs, or like you mentioned, long straight hair with straight bangs would look very trendy and cool :D
p.s i am hoping to dye my hair red for a change as well during the summer
good luck to both of us :p
January 8th, 2008 at 7:10 am
I’m in the minority but I don’t think the last two cuts with severe bangs are good ideas. I had a similar cut for several years and unless you’re hair is perfectly straight, it’s a lot of work. I couldn’t deal with the blowdrying/straightening every day so I started getting Japanese chemical straightening…and I don’t even have curly hair, it’s mostly straight with a very slight wave, pretty similar to yours. I also got sick of having the same haircut as every hipster girl.
Your style feels a little looser and less blunt than the pics you posted. I hate to mention celebrities, but what about Kirsten Dunst’s style? She has shoulder length hair with a longish razored bang that looks a little messy and totally effortless, even when it’s “done”. Shoulder length or slightly above is so versatile with a good cut.
I’m sure whatever you choose will look great!
January 8th, 2008 at 7:14 am
Hey, I totally love this blog and I love your style - congratulations!
I cut my long hair off a while ago and it was quite distressing but once you get used to it you can still wear your old wardrobe, you just have to style it a little differently, sometimes a little girlier and softer.
At the moment I am loving Kimberley Stewart’s hair (who would have thought it!). It is quite a rock take on the good old angled bob. She has the back really short with really straight with a really long fringe. It is also kinda messy and not too groomed which I love. I tried to find some good pics but alas all I could find was these links.

Go for the fringe, girl. I am a hairdresser so this topic is what I love. Keep your hair long if you are apprehensive (you can always cut more, you can’t less) and fringe is currently in style, so now is your chance. You have great cheekbones and a longer fringe will only accentuate them and add to your dramatic look. (Check out actress Keira Knightly’s new haircut for an example) They will require frequent trims, but it is worth it for a while.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Thanks so much all of you, it really helps!
Sally Jane, thanks for the link! Your hair is much like mine and it looks great even if it’s not ultra straight like the photos above.
January 8th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Go for bangs! I live in Oslo too and when I had bangs I just dropped by my (or any) hairdresser when it got to long and they cut it for free…
January 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
go for the change if you feel like it. as many a reader said, it’s only hair it will grow should you dislike the result.
short cuts require more frequent hairdresser visits (i.e. more money), bangs do to, as it is very difficult to cut the bangs well at home as an inexperienced person, usually, it ends with a disaster (especially bangs like in the 3rd and 4th pic), i know what i’m talking of :) so keep that in mind (although this is not to discourage you).
also, keep in mind that your hair is heavy and thick, and tends to be wavy a bit (i have the same), so looks based on super straight hair require a straightening iron and a few extra minutes. when picking a pic with a haircut you like, always think of the quality of hair (heavy or thin hair, one cut doesn’t look the same with the two types), face shape of a model (haircuts can change the way your face appears) and whether it is versatile (in this case, straight long hair clearly wins) and suits your overall style.
ad the pics you chose, the first two i wouldn’t recommend, the bangs are nice but outrageous, when they constantly get into your eyes, you’ll end up with a bobby pin and your bangs pinned to the side…
the 3rd and 4th, nice, but the bangs don’t suit everybody and to keep your hair so sleek requires quite a few minutes. if i were your, i’d maybe go for a bob (perhaps with the front ends longer than the rear). the best you can do, go to a hairdresser and flick through magazines. best of luck!
January 8th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
The short brown haircut will look really cute. It´s a bit of Agyness Deyn mixed with rock glam…
This haircut will generate a funny and interesting contrast between your hippie-ethno-spring-style and the hairstyle…pluck up courage and just do!

You have hair texture numerous girls would die for !!
Something not too high maintenance and radical would definitely be a straight fringe, length shortened a little bit, and lots and lots of layers.Tell your hairdresser to thin out the back with a razor n give random layers on the front.
This way all u will need to after waking up is straighten ur fringe or blowdry it and leave the rest of the hair wavy as it is…Or if you’re feeling like it, straighten all your hair and the layers will show realy nicely.
If you dont want to go for a really really rhick blunt fringe, opt for a slightly thinner fringe like this

Kate Moss does the fringe thing well even though she doesn’t have poker straight hair. I cut my hair like Agnyess Deyn awhile ago. It does require frequent cuts but I do them myself. I say don’t go drastic, yet. Do the fringe and if ya still want to go short the summer is the perfect time. Also have ya ever thought about changing the color or just highlights? It makes a big difference. Loads of shine!
January 8th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
I really prefer the shorter styles. That’s so cool with geeky glasses..! And not unimportant: there are many many options with a hair-cut like that.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Personally, I can’t stand my own bangs. I’ve had them forever, and they look good when I take the time, but they get so frustrating if your in a rush. My advice would be if your going for bangs, get them with a style that allows you to pin them back on days when you dont want to wake up 20 minutes early to get done up.
But of course, you might just end up looking absolutely fabulous with whatever they give you, and probably wont need any time to make them look perfect.:)
January 8th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Hullo! LOVE your blog, I’m seriously addicted….hehehe….
My two cents:
I’ve done it all (butt length-long, hot pink, black, bleached bone-white, shaved up one side, serious bangs, bobbed, pixie, rocker mullet, ETC!) and most I loved. (I worked in a salon for six years, and they liked to experiment on me…hehehe…)
The secret is:
“Head-space”, and attitude. You really have to be ready mentally for any change you make to your own appearance. Clothes, you can put on, and take off at leisure. Hair, not so much. :)
But girl, you have GOT that attitude. I can see it in the way you present yourself, and the colors and textures you love. Find something that you absolutely become obsessed with, and imagine your hair like that every minute of every day like that. Finally, if it’s the right cut, you’ll realize you’ve ‘had’ that cut for weeks and the only thing that needs to be done is the actual CUT!
Try not to listen to anyone else’s advice too much about what suits you, etc…..(I really mean no offence to anyone giving advice here, honest) Just find something you’re absolutely MAD about, and go for it! Hair really is the ultimate accessory; it grows back. The great thing about hair right now is that practically ANYTHING is very stylish right now. If you try to go too ‘middle of the road’, that is the only faux pas I think I’ve made in the past.
Personally, I’m fond of the heavy-fringe photos (the last set) you put up. Very chic, versatile. Can be dressed very up, very down.
Sorry about the diatribe! Whatever you choose, I know you’re gonna RAWK IT.

If you are worried about your hair being too thick for any style, ask the stylist about using a razor for your hair.
January 9th, 2008 at 1:32 am
I think you should go for the new kate moss cut. Shoulder length layers with a long blunt bang.
P.S.-i just recently stumbled upon your blog & it’s my new web obsession!
January 9th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
My sister had a haircut pretty similar to the brunette one with the heavy fringe, and from your pictures, i would say that your hair is pretty similar to hers, and hers looked really good. She did have to get it trimmed every so often but when she couldnt be bothered, she just swept it to the side or back off her face and pinned it, and that worked well also as the fringe is so long that it stays there easily.
January 9th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Hi! I cut my hair short 3 month ago. I think we have both similar hair. I really like my new look, and you can belive, a chance is sometimes really refreshing. Now my hairs look a bit like this: http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/artisan_entertainment/ghost_dog__the_way_of_the_samurai/tricia_vessey/ghostdog.jpg
(Sorry for the bad picture - I didn’t find a better one so fast) But my bangs are a bit longer. This look also goes without an extra styling. In fact, I loose now less time in the bath. So I would recommend a bob, what I could also imagine fine is a bob à la Katie Holmes ore paris Hilton..

i think change is great. but any change will/ can be scary.
ive been browsing websites searching for an ideal cut for my self.

I think a fringe would suit you: quite long and thick. I had a long, red hair two years ago and I got really really bored with it - so I went to the hair dressers’ and cut it off! After a few hours I had a short, black hair. I haven’t regretted it once! Now my hair is already longer, I have a short bob with a fringe, but I think I won’t be returning to my old hair style (the long one) for a loooong time…!
Try it! It’s only hair and it grows back…
January 11th, 2008 at 3:19 am
Get this style:

i vote for a bob personally
January 12th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
the blonde picture, hands down, it would look spectacular

I have the heavy bangs with rounded edges right now. Just got it a couple weeks ago, and while it’s amazing and I love it to death it’s A LOT of work. (it’s EXACTLY like the blonde one)
I, naturally, have very thick hair (that my stylist did a fabulous job at thinning) and it’s curly to boot. So I definately have to spend a lot more time than I would have liked to straighten/maintain it.
As long as you’re willing to commit to the style and don’t mind spending some days with bad hair because you experimented with it, then I say go for it.
If you do get it I suggest getting the layers long enough that on your lazy days you can simply wear it up and just straighten your bangs.
One thing that I also found that looks very cute with it is straight bangs and everything else curly. Though the haircut seems like it would imit you I found it gave me a lot more options.
