20´s Party

Filed in: Fashion, Outfits

This upcoming Saturday it´s my birthday so we will be having a birthday party as well as a housewarming party, and the theme will be the 1920´s. You know, flapper dresses, spectator shoes, big band music, cigarette holders, gangsters – whatever existed in the 20´s. I haven´t got a lot of clothes from the era, and as far as I can think of, only two dresses that can somewhat fit into the look, either a little flapper looking or more just the shapeless fit, although nothing with a drop waist. I´m testing out things a little today, trying to decide what to go for. I don´t know which dress to choose and which accessories to wear with which dress. Everything might not be spot on for the era, but as long as it feels a little glamorous I´m not going to be fuzzy about it.

One possibility is the more casual look, but it is a little outdoorsy. The lipstick is of course Chanel.

There´s the feather boa. And the turban. The turban might not be a staple for the 20´s, but as far as I know it was worn. I attached a rhinestone brooch that of course can be removed.

Then there´s the more flapper inspired looks with feathers in the hair. The tiered dress will have to replace the fringes. The biggest problem here is the bangs. The wing hair clip is from Menagerie Design, I just put it into a headband.

The little details like the seamed stockings. And pearls.

I´ve played around with my ideas a little, now I´d love to hear your thoughts! Fashion history is not really my strongest side and I do not have the biggest selection, so help will be appreciated. Which dress with which accessories? Or perhaps you have completely different ideas?

  1. Eve Says:

As for me, You look great in the third outfit! It’s awesome! :)

  2. Renée S. / FashionFillers Says:

I would say the last. Though the third looks great too ;)

  3. Jess Says:

I love all your looks and think your outfits are excellent regardless of your limited resoucres. I have to say the 2nd look is my favourite as it is glamorous yet completely orginal and still looks like the 20’s. The other two looks are perhaps more generic-i can’t help but feel that everyone would immediately think of the 3rd lok but not the 2nd.

  4. Sidsel Says:

I think you should go for the look with the turban. To me, that’s the most 20-esque and the prettiest :)

  5. ediot Says:

    utrolig stilig du er!

  6. nicole Says:

definitely go for the third, that headpiece is amazing!

  7. stine Says:

the third one! love the headpiece! :)

  8. DONNASANDRA Says:

THAT is a party I would like to go to! ;-) I love the second and third look!

  9. WendyB Says:

All these looks are great. My favorite is the turban because it looks very 20s without being something everyone else will wear.

  10. Rosie Says:

    Definately the turban.

  11. Mel Says:

Definetely the second one. The turban is absolutely the “roaring twenties”!! You can always opt for the black dress with the turban, but I like the combination you had with the white and black.

  12. guest Says:

I think you look especially great with the feathers in your hair, and the black dress. You remind me of vaudeville-dancers:

    http://nfo.net/graphics/BeePalmer.jpg

    and

    http://www.vermontartscouncil.org/Portals/0/Images/Grants/AM/Karen%20Amiraultcharleston.jpg

Maybe you could try pulling your bangs a little to one side before putting on the feathers, to keep it from getting in your eyes. As a second choice, the turban and boa is also a good 20’s outfit, in my opinion.

Good luck choosing the outfit, and happy birthday in advance!:)

  13. KellyR Says:

Oh, I love that bejeweled hat, amazing. You look out of a movie. What shade of Chanel lipstick are you wearing? I love it! Happy almost Birthday!

  14. Jessica Says:

love the idea for the party and the feather head dress is my favorite!! hands down.

  15. Erin Says:

I love the second look! The Great Gatsby is a great source of inspiration for the 20’s, all of Daisy’s outfits are dead on! Love it and love your blog as well! Have fun and happy birthday!

  16. TheClothesHorse Says:

I like the third look the best, that headpiece is fantastic. Sounds like a very stylish party.

  17. pia Says:

defenitely the 2nd look! it´s the most fashionable…and the turban gives just the right twist!

  18. TO Says:

    Definitely the feather!!!!

  19. katrín Says:

I can’t decide! You look gorgeous and 20’s-ish in all of them! But the last is simple an classy, with a red lipstick I think that’s a winner.

  20. Ashe Mischief Says:

It’s your Birthday! I say wear them ALL– just change outfits every few hours. It’s your day, might as well be the belle of the ball.

  21. daniela Says:

while the third outfit is probably the most obviously suited for the theme–feather headbands are oh-so 1920s, i was immediately drawn to the turban, which is a more subtle, glamorous 20s. i love that outfit.

    happy almost birthday!

  22. Iselillja Says:

The turban looks amazing, but my favorite has to be the third one. Stunning and really 20’s, in my opinion at least :)

  23. faithsalutes Says:

winged head piece and lined tights are a must.

  24. Jill Says:

I think the 3rd one is the most appropriate! However, you should stick with the clothes in the 3rd and try different looks with the hats? Good thing you got a fringed cut- that’s very 20s like ;)

    Happy Birthday!!

  25. amy may Says:

i’d say wear the black dress with the turban (with the rhinestone brooch, that’s perfect!), the stockings and the silver heels. i love the cigarette holder too!

    happy nearly-birthday :)

  26. bambi Says:

here’s the order in which i like them:

    2
    3
    4
    1

    i hope that helps. =)

    xoxoxo

    p.s. happy early birthday, gorgeous!
p.s.s. i have you linked on my page

  27. smokey Says:

the seamed stockings and turban are so glamorous! with the pearls, and the right accesories, i think any of the dresses you’ve chosen will look prefect.

  28. M Says:

omigosh, this looks like so much fun!!! i’ve always wanted to do something like this! you HAVE to post pics from your party so we can all live vicariously through your creativity. i love the outfits with the turban and the feather/headband the most. and i’m totally digging on those stockings. i’ve been looking for seamed stockings everywhere, but i can’t find them in any department stores…and in case i don’t get a chance to say so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

  29. rose Says:

I like the top look best but it’s prolly more 40’s then 20’s. That said I say the third look is the way too go. Oh and wear those seamed stockings whichever way you decide to go. Sexy mama!

  30. Kristel Says:

I like the 1st one most.

  31. konviki Says:

i really see you in last dress + this headband. its so..chic!

  32. sromeo Says:

I have to agree with those who chose look number 3. While all the looks are lovely, the third is the most party appropriate, most 20’s appropriate, and most importantly, the most fun! I don’t know how much effort you are willing to put into your hair (which looks fabulous everyday, by the way) but I think a wavey 20’s do would look really nice for this occasion. I’ve also realized a page-boy bob would look wonderful on you. Have you ever considered?

  33. Alyssa Says:

The 3rd outfit is certainly the most twenty-ish!
The 1st, to me, looks more 40’s, maybe because of that hat and lipstick.
But wow, they’re all amzing, it’ a difficult choice indeed.

  34. doha Says:

i like the third looks is my favorite – but of course – with the seamed stockings
i love the clip from menagerie
    happy birthday!

  35. eliza Says:

I love the one with the turban, it’s my favorite! I can’t see the whole dress but as long as it’s a sort of slinky slip dress I think it would look great. The necklace in the last photo is also appropriate and very awesome. And all the misc. objects (cigarette holder, perfume, lipstick) are great. Have Fun!

  36. mena Says:

i love the third the best

  37. Belle Says:

i love the third and fourth look the best–but the third is over the top and amazing, so i would definitely wear that. it’s your own party, so go crazy!

  38. Mej (Fashiolution.Com) Says:

I’m diggin’ the second look with the turban and the third look with the feathers. But the third look in which you wear the flapper dress is the most 20s era =)

  39. EZ Says:

Love it! I say combine a bit from each look above; the cig holder, the pearls, the black turban w/pin, the black dress, the boa, the stockings and the silver shoes (they ARE t-straps, no?) The light boa will bring out the shine of the silver shoes!
Also, you could do your hair as a faux 20s bob. I recently saw how you can make it LOOK like you’ve cut your long hair into a bob. Separate the top layer of your long hair, pull it up out of the way into a ponytail and curl the ends of the ponytail only. Then pull the rest of your hair into a low slick ponytail at the nape of your neck and pin the end of that ponytail up flat. Then you let down the curled top layer and the style looks like you have bobbed your hair with no scissors…hope my explanation makes sense, lol! Or if you went with the headband, you could do a fingerwave to your bangs and sweep them into a deep part and slick the ends into two spitcurls on the sides of your face under the band. That would look great with your cheekbones!
Obviously I think you should go all out!
What fun, have a great time and happy birthday!!!

  40. vivian Says:

the second one is the absolute best… tierred dresses are so overdone when it comes to the 20s, no?

  41. Rachel Says:

    HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of those outfits are simply fabulous and stylin :)

  42. Renee Says:

turban turban turban!!! But maybe with the black frill dress (it’s a skirt yeah?) and you have to wear red hot lipstick!

  43. vancouverista Says:

I hope you take pictures of your final outfit and also those of your party guests!!

  44. amelia Says:

the turban was considered to be a high society lady, like for the woman who were very bohemian and new age and went to the most extravagant balls. i mean the hat you have in the first picure is called a “cloche” and was the most commen, not as expiramental. if you were a real “cool cat” lol you wore a turban. you look extra ritzy with the jewels and ive seen them with jewels. by the way I HAVE STUDIED THE TWENTIES AND I DID A RESEARCH PAPER ON THE FASHION OF THE TWENTIES.so i know your quite accurate :) also the makeup of the time was red lipstick, black eyeliner with blue or green jeweled shadow, this worn because it was the time they discovered KING TUT’S GRAVE.
you said you wouldn’t mine our thoughts… so here are mine.

    1.everyone wore red polish
2.try “rouging” your knees they did that
3.you can try wearing enamle (sp?) jewelry for that “art deco” feel.
    4.pearls, pearls and more pearls.
    5.liquid eyeliner.

i think your really accurate, the shoes stockings white tunic and turban are of the era . even if you weren’t exactly dead on, your right its not a big deal. you’ll look glamorous anyways:)

  45. marysia Says:

Love all your looks, especially the second and the third one you look amazing, I hope your birthday is amazing so happy early birthday! =)

  46. Chang Says:

I really can’t decide which one looks the best, but they all look amazing.

Are you going to do anything special for your hair? Like curl it for something more 20’s?

  47. Chang Says:

Actually, the second dress is the most period appropriate. The thrid one seems more like a stereotypical modern adaptation.

  48. tea hobbyist Says:

I like the first look, but I think that you would have to wear a different dress in order to make it work. If you have another long tunic dress, maybe you could belt it lower at the hips and pull some fabric over it to create a drop waist effect? Other than the first, I like the second look as well.

  49. Agathe Says:

Thanks so much for all your feedback, it’s very helpful. I still don’t know what to do with my hair, if anything, but your ideas for the hair are great too!

  50. Anna Says:

    3rd look! Love it!

But like the second a lot too. Take photos of the party for us please! And happy birthday to you!

  51. zahira Says:

    the third one is stunning!

  52. Kate Says:

The third outfit looks the best. I like the headpiece. I’m just not sure about the turban because it’s a bit of weird trend at the moment.

  53. Juliee. Says:

the 1st and 2nd are great!

  54. CelebritySurgery.net Says:

You look so posh and fabulous in your 20’s outfit. I find the 2nd and 3rd ensemble gorgeous giving you that Cruella de vile aura.

  55. Agathe Says:

    Thanks again!

KellyR, I forgot to answer your question, but it’s the Barcelona Red as far as I can remember.

EZ, yes, t-straps they are. :)

  56. Glamourbibliotekaren Says:

    Barcelona Red, herlig :)

  57. Agathe Says:

Glamourbibliotekaren, du har så klart æren for det valget!

  58. kim Says:

I love the turban look! Would love to see the party pictures :)

  59. Eliza Says:

  60. amelie Says:

Kanskje dette er noe for deg:
    http://www.return2style.de/swingstyle/makeup/20amimup.html.
Denne siden har veldig fine tegninger av klærne som ble brukt. samt endel fine frisyrer.

  61. Agathe Says:

Eliza, satser på bilder fra festen, ja. :)

    Amelie, takk for linker!

  62. Eva Says:

They are all gorgeous, but I like the 3rd and the 4th best. The 3rd is the most dramatic, so as you will be the birthday girl, that could be just it!

  63. shaz Says:

I love the second look with the turban.

The first look is classy, but it covers alot of your face, and i think you would want to be able to see ur face in all ur birthday photos.

The third one is cool but a bit to modern.

  64. Maushami Says:

Oh my god I did a double take when I read todays entry! I read your blog everyday. Guess what, its my birthday this saturday and housewarming and the theme is…roaring twenties! I am wearing a champagne coloured flapper dress I made for new year. I will send pictures.

I am totally blown away at the coincidence. Must be an 8 March thing.

    - Maushami, South Africa

  65. scret. Says:

    Jente17telemark.

  66. dwine Says:

i like the first one best, but do quite like the turban as well.

I love the tights with seam!- they used to be difficult to get hold of (since I am a tanguera I am always looking for them)

do wear the beige dress and not the black one (everyone will be wearing black)

Make up will make all the difference: pale complexion, deep red lips and kohl black eyes.

in the end though you want to look interesting and pretty rather than a 100% historically accurate so just go for what you like best

    enjoy!

  67. dwine Says:

how about a 1920’s tango in Paris look?:

  68. Agathe Says:

Maushami, that IS crazy! But do let me in on any good ideas if you’ve got. :) I almost don’t dare to ask how old you will be..?

Scret, jess, giftet meg i fjor sommer. Mannen min har sin egne, veldig sjeldent oppdaterte, blogg på Trashion.

Dwine, thanks for all the tips and links – very appreciated!

  69. Virginia Says:

ahhh….love! I dressed in 20’s garb for New Years…I wore a vintage sequined skirt (but as a dress) with a headband I had made….love all of these looks!

    Virginia @ RADICALPROPER.blogspot.com

  70. Pearl Says:

I say the feather boa. With the Turban. And the brooch. It’s totally flapper diva. Have fun! :) PEARL

  71. kiki Says:

aaw, I want to play 20s dress up! I think I like the turban look best, though the third head piece is amazing xx

  72. etty Says:

I would recommand getting your hair cut into a bob for the party (along the chin line). I belive that was the most chic haircut at the time.

  73. silje Says:

Synes den 3 looken er mest 20tallet, eventuelt med turbanen m brosje, som var skikkelig stilig. Fortsett å inspirere! hilsen Silje
    http://www.siljesfashion.blogspot.com

  74. Eliza Says:

  75. Anne Says:

I really love your look because “les années folles” are my favorite time for fashion. I wish I would have an opportunity to dress like you!

  76. Romeika Says:

I love the 1920s..and your blog too!

  77. Salla Says:

The first look was prettiest but honestly I liked them all!!! :)

  78. Lorraine Says:

Oh, I love the Twenties (Some month ago, I made a presentation in school about this decade!) Everthing is so full of glamour!!!!
I mostly like the first & third outfit!!!
Hope to see nice pictures how you decided!!!
    bye

  79. maja Says:

I love the hat from 1) but i think its more for outside, for your party i would go with the dress from 4) and definitly the pearl necklace, the stockings and the shoes from 4) and maybe the fur from 1) .. i do love the turban though, thanks to amelia for enlightening us about why they were worn ;-) .. so i would say if you go with the black dress (skirt?) you should go for the turban!

  80. Agathe Says:

Thanks again for all your comments! And thanks to all you fashion history experts to give us some pointers.

Anybody in Oslo the 8th of March? ;)

  81. KellyR Says:

Thank you Agathe! I’ll be hopping down to my local lipstick store soon! Have fun dressing up—

  82. Natty Says:

I love the second outfit with the turban! I think the seamed tights are more 40’s / 50’s war time but the tuban is spot on. Love the lipstick too!

  83. Natty Says:

Oh and happy birthday for Saturday! xx

  84. Ramona Says:

i really love the third outfit.but the second one is great too.and i think the tights from the last one are pretty 20ies…maybe you could combine them with the third outfit…best wishes,Ramona

  85. lady coveted Says:

    happy birthday!

oh i like all the looks, but i’m thinking the turban, looks particularly interesting.

i love the pantyhose with the line…

  86. Zaidy Says:

Perhaps some looking at these will trigger some more ideas. Tho, my pick would be no. 3, because that hairpiece rocks. I think u might wanna try and put some wave in ur hair, it’s not as hard as u’d imagine. Good luck!

    http://silent-movies.com/Ladies/zFlappers.html

  87. PattiG Says:

Hi Agathe!!! I really like the third outfit but I was thinking in a little twist to it… I saw this Mae west picture http://www.lasplash.com/uploads/1/mae-west.jpg

and I remembered some Vintage Amore black dress you have instead of the black skirt and you can also add more pearl neacklaces to the look like the one you just got some days… hope you like the suggestion!

  88. earthkitten Says:

    Oooh the turban, the turban!

    Happy birthday!

I second the motion for photos of the party….but you’ll be the best dressed there, hands down. :)

  89. Farah Says:

I found your blog website in a magazine I was reading a few months ago and decided to check it out. Lucky that I have! :)

I would go for the second or third look. Both look very 20s.

  90. Fashion Tidbits Says:

wow! i really like your dress! it goes well with the pearls!

  91. Hanna Says:

the hat in the third picture looks divine!

  92. elp Says:

    turban!

  93. Chiara Says:

The three of them are pretty cool, I’d personally wear the turban as 1. it suits you well (and turbans are not for everyone!) and 2. i think it’s the least obvious, as most people would go for the flapper look, especially the headpiece as it’s a landmark of the Twenties. Let us know what you choose in the end, I’m really very curious and love this dress code! x x x

  94. camilla Says:

lei the great gatsby filmen for inspirasjon ( du ser allerede ut som en av rollefigurene:)

  95. Mer Says:

pure glam, You look fabulous in all outfits!!

  96. kokk Says:

    So cool
