Tie Dye
Filed in: DIY, Fashion, Outfits
I´ve been planning to do some tie dyeing for like forever after discovering just how hard it is to find something nice of the sort in shops, but I kept forgetting to buy something to dye. So today I decided it was about time to do something about it. I had a look through my closet to find something, just to test it out at least. I found an H&M tank that I recently got without trying. It looked so nice in the shop, but when I got home I discovered that it was see-through at the same time that you couldn´t wear a bra underneath it because of the cut. I meant to return it but never did. It would have to do.
While tying the knots on the tank I felt quite lost as for what I was doing. Suddenly I didn´t know which side was which anymore so I just tied my little knots wherever there was room. The other part was the actual dyeing, problem being that the instructions were in German, and my German is a little rusty. I didn´t even understand the name of the color, it just looked like something dark, almost black something. It turned out pretty well in the end though I think, and after stretching, it´s almost long enough to wear as a dress.
I have been trying to make my husband get used to the idea of tie dye since we met more than a year ago. He was still pretty iffy on it, but agreed to dye a stained white t-shirt he had lying around. Didn´t turn out to bad that one either. If he doesn´t wear it, I´ll snatch it for myself.
I also have a ton of slips and half slips around, so I decided to give a skirt ago as well. In this one you can really tell how lost I was when it came to tying the knots. On one side there are just random circles here and there, while on the other side, there´s one big circle. I´m not sure what my original idea was anyway, wear my half slip as a skirt? It might work, but would feel very 1990´s as that´s probably the last time I did that. Not to mention also the last time I wore anything tie dye.
The top I like and ended up wearing at the end of the day.

hi, aghate
love your tie dye project and I wish I knew how to do it my self!
How come you don’ celebrate Easter?

How would you combine this skirt now?
The tank looks pretty cool, but isn’t tie die stuff hard to combine without making it look very 1990’s? Next time you have to dare pink or purple die! :)

Natty, check out YouTube, there are tons of how to videos! About Easter, I have never had a special relationship to it, even though our family used to celebrate. I eat lots of eggs though and my husband gave me an easter egg full of candy. ;)
Erythrin, I´m not sure! And I agree, tye dye is difficult, but it´s no harm giving it a shot! I have a pack of purple dye, and a bright blue one, and dark blue. I will just have to find something to dye first.

Hey Agathe,
I’ve been following your blog for awhile, and just have to tell you that I love your personal style.
I’m living in Paris for the next couple of months and was wondering if you knew of any cool little boutiques and shops to find original clothes in…. I discovered a few second hand stores and flea markets, but I’ve been doing most of my shopping on ebay.fr (scored a sweet little pair of Santiags the other day!)

i think the tank looks great on you! and as far as the whole 90’s thing although it did make a comeback in that decade it started in the 60’s and who cares when it was popular, you shouldn’t not wear something because it’s not “in” you should wear something because YOU look cool in it. and i think the way you paired it with skinny jeans looks totally fresh and modern. and for the skirt that is my favorite piece it is gorgeous and almost a little goth with the lace detail, try putting it together with a leather jacket and oxford shoes or something, wear those big bead earrings. you will make it look cool no matter what :)

i love the tie dye tank! i was just wondering what bra you’re wearing with it, if you’re wearing one. i always have problems with wearing those types of tanks.

Benedicte, ditto! ;)
Amanda, I am from Norway, originally from a small island called Træna.
Samantha, it´s been years since I was in Paris, but I will probably do some research before I go there in August.
Lea, it just stretched by itself when it was wet, but you can do that yourself to clothes before they dry.
Amelia, even though tie dye started in the 60´s I was only alive to experience it´s revival in the 90´s. :) And I agree, wearing something just cause it´s trendy is silly.
Janey, I´m not wearing a bra here… I got one of those bras with straps you can wear in a million different ways once, thought it would be super smart, but I never used it. I am not very big chested so I don´t feel like I have to wear a bra, but those bras with adjustable straps are good for those who doesn´t like to be without one.

That looks absolutely adorable!!♥
I have a question if it is not too personal: How long have you been married to your husband? You seem to be such a nice couple!!:)
March 24th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
We´ve been married for about 7 months now I think. And known eachother for about a year. :)

Lovely stuff Agathe, I’m a great fan of your blog and always check out whats inspiring your fashion world!
If you dont mind me asking, how exactly do you maintain such a great figure? Are you religious to certain exercises or avoid some foods etc.
Once again, lots of love (from London) xx
March 24th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I don´t exercise and I don´t avoid any kind of food (except the kind I don´t like). I´ve grown up on fish, potatoes and lots of butter, right now I just try to add more vegetables to my diet.

Seriously, I love your blog. I tend to check it everyday. You really understand the “fun” of being a girl: I’ve started writing again, because of your blog!
Anyway, when I first read about the tie-dye, I thought “No! Don’t do it!”, I hated tie-dye even when it was cool…but, I have to admit the skirt/slip came out really nice. Once again, well done!

your tie-die comes out a lot nicer than what’s made for stores.. yours looks almost mystical! very nice job.

Rockin!
March 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Great blog :)
I love the shirt, it turned out really well!
March 25th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I always have the most difficult time dying slips. For some reason the fabric doesn’t take the dye very well. did you leave them soaking for a long time???
March 25th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
SoulTanggg, I wasn´t sure it would work either, but I had no problems. I let it soak for 20 minutes in pretty hot water, probably 90 C.
March 25th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
love the tank top!!!
